Acquia Releases the Reservoir Distribution for Decoupled Drupal & OpenEDU for Online Learning

DrupalCon North America, the largest and most important annual convention for Drupal developers, took place this year in Baltimore (April 24-28, 2017) with Drupal founder and Acquia CTO Dries Buytaert delivering the keynote address. One of the new innovations in the Drupal platform that received a lot of attention at the convention was the advancement of various strategies for decoupling Drupal in order to separate the frontend and backend processes in a manner that allows for content to be streamed to multiple devices via APIs, overriding the standard theme-driven system of publication. Use of JSON API & OpenAPI, as implemented in the recent Reservoir distribution from Acquia for decoupled Drupal installs, can turn the Drupal CMS into a publishing engine that can be used with IoT devices, augmented reality applications, voice recognition systems like Alexa, fitness wearables, AI chatbots, and other next-generation software platforms that extend beyond the web browser. The 2017 DrupalCon featured 12 main session tracks with 175+ seminars & featured speakers, as well as a convention hall with thousands of IT company booths, all representing the vibrancy of Drupal's open source development community.

Draft: A Command Line Utility for the Auto-Production & Orchestration of Docker Containers

In April of 2017, Microsoft acquired Deis, a small start-up company specializing in container services for data center management, in order to integrate the Workflow, Helm, and Steward utilities for Kubernetes into the Azure Cloud platform. Workflow is a continuous integration suite for DevOps teams that enables Agile/Scrum workstation collaboration through distributed network teams with Docker, Kubernetes, and custom web server stack extensions for common programming languages like PHP, Python, Java, ASP.NET, Perl, Go, & Ruby on Rails. Helm charts allow for the easy management of build snapshots for Docker and Kubernetes containers at scale over millions of server nodes in the cloud. Steward is part of the Kubernetes incubator for Service Catalog development with Red Hat, IBM, & the Microsoft Deis team working together on the project. This month Microsoft announced the availability of Draft on the Azure Container Service, a new command line utility that speeds up the deployment and orchestration of Docker containers in Kubernetes clusters through the auto-installation of required stack software. Kubernetes can also be used with Apache Mesos, Rancher, and Docker Swarm on the Azure Cloud Platform to compete with similar product offerings from AWS, Google Cloud, Rackspace, & IBM.

Microservices, DevOps, Open Analytics, Bluemix, & Nutanix Highlight Keynotes at Cloud Expo 2017

Two of the best resources for keeping up to date on the latest developments and platform innovation in cloud web hosting are the annual RightScale "State of the Cloud" report and the Cloud Expo convention seminars sponsored at different locations by IBM. The opening keynote of the 2017 Cloud Expo in New York was delivered by Michael Maximilien on Bluemix, detailing IBM's efforts to build the "Perfect Cloud Operating System for the Enterprise" through an abundance of XaaS products combined with Watson & Cloud Foundry. Jason McGee of IBM also delivered a lecture on "Microservices: Choosing the Right Cloud Services and Tools." The day 2 keynote was delivered by Jeff Scheaffer, the Senior Vice President and General Manager for the Application Delivery Business Unit at CA Technologies, on the topic of "DevOps and the Age of Cloud Craftsmanship." The final day 3 keynote address at the 2017 Cloud Expo was delivered by Chris Brown & Mark Lavi of Nutanix on the new "Nutanix Enterprise Cloud for DevOps." Another major theme trending at the 2017 Cloud Expo was the development of "serverless" solutions based around the Function as a Service (FaaS) model, built on AWS Lambda and Apache OpenWhisk.

SolusVM: Integrated Platform Management Tools for VPS Hosting

Web Hosting Companies Increasingly License SolusVM Software for VPS Platform Management

SolusVM is becoming increasingly popular in the web hosting industry for small, independent start-up companies who need a reliable means of managing VPS plans for customer support. SolusVM can be used with WHMCS, cPanel, CentOS, & a billing system like ClientExec to give resellers a full suite of web hosting service products on a single dedicated server. Just as WHMCS provides a complete solution for shared hosting business operations on Linux servers, SolusVM can be used to manage VPS partitions that are re-sold to clients under retail hosting account plans. Independent web hosting companies can lease dedicated hardware in a cloud data center or colocation facility to use SolusVM, WHMCS, cPanel, CentOS, & CloudLinux to scale from shared reseller plans to full operation of branded web hosting services as VPS providers by licensing the software from OnApp for use on a specific number of servers.

Apache Spark, Kafka, & Flink Showcase Innovation with Hadoop for "Big Data" Applications

The Apache Software Foundation is one of the oldest and most respected of the open source software governing organizations, driven by the massive industry adoption of Apache HTTP web servers over the last 20 years. The Apache Software Foundation was founded by the programmers of the original web server platform in 1999 with a broader mission to support the development of free open source software projects and their communities to build the next generation of web standards. The Apache License is similar to the GNU GPL, MIT, & BSD software licenses for publishing open source code that can be used, copied, modified, cloned, and resold by other developers or companies without restriction other than continued openness & attribution. There are over 300 projects currently in development within the Apache Software Foundation ecosystem which includes a Labs, Incubator, Attic, and Infrastructure Team. Some of the current ASF projects that are trending to wider industry adoption in 2017 are Apache Spark, Kafka, & Flink, each implementing aspects of CQRS in new ways for optimizing reactive data streams in cloud platform architecture to support a new generation of web applications.
